According to a new study, the Californian variant of coronavirus (Epsilon) has the ability to neutralize antibodies that the body produces after vaccination. The CAL.20C variant is therefore more durable than the British or the Indian Delta variant.

Virologist Boris Klempa told Refresher that this variant is spreading more slowly. Therefore, there's no need to be afraid of it as much as the fast-spreading variants. The scientists do call it a variant of concern, though.

Aside from California, it has appeared in 34 other countries around the world. However, according to Boris Klempa, the danger of this mutation spreading in our neck of the woods is very low at the moment.

"I do not assume that this variant would pose as big of a risk as Delta, despite being ahead of the vaccines. The most relevant feature is contagiousness, " explains the virologist, adding that the biggest problems were caused by the British variant and the Indian Delta.

"For example, the South African variant is more immune to vaccines than this one in California. Despite having reached countries with high vaccination rates, such as Israel, it has not spread there. The more infectious variants have always been a problem, " he says. The expert adds that the risk of the presence of the California variant in our region is negligible.
